TUESDAY 16TH FEBRUARY
We walked along the wobbly wobbly way through the mangroves in our hotel gardens and saw one of those fast moving frill neck type lizards scooting over the swamp. We walked about 4km in the heat, hugging the shadows through the palm oil forest towards Castillo San Felipe and eventually came to a ramshackle village with the hotel Vinas del lago at the end just near the castle with lovely views across lake Izabal towards the Rio dulce gorge and the sea.
The hotel was empty except for us and we paid £3 each to swim for the day in the pool. Below the restaurant is a lovely tropical garden leading down to the lake where there is a jetty. A cabana for 3 here will cost you around £52 per night during the week and £62 per night over the weekend. Service is good and the meals are cheaper than Tortugal.
We caught a private launch home in time for dinner - a nice relaxing day

Tomorrow is our last day here before we head up to Tikal - hope the bus isn't too hary this time!
